COP3 : article how to kill creativity

How to Kill creativity

This article was really useful to learn how creativity is 'Killed' It brought up issues like extrinsic motivation and money constraints. Amabile explained how creative people are intrinsically motivated, they do not need a carrot dangled in front of their nose as such. When businesses start to extrinsically motivate people like through threats it hinders the person creative potential. Amabile also mentioned that the use of fake deadlines can hinder potential massively and cause a layer of distrust.

Above is a diagram from the article that is described at the three components of creativity. these are expertise, creative thinking skills and motivation all three of these things together equals a creativity. This description relates well to graphic design as when a designer works on a branding and identity brief for a client they often have to build up an expertise in what ever the clients profession is. The creative thinking skills would come down to the process of graphic design it is a process which involved a a lot of problem solving and generating ideas and concepts. And motivation seems to be what most graphic designers poses, as a whole from my personal observation we seem like quite an obsessive bunch of people who are very self motivated, everyone does work for their own self gratification not because they have to.
