RESPONSIVE : BRIEF - secret 7

HAIM :

To get a better understanding of the band Haim I have looked at four areas :

- bio

- image

- lyrics

- current ep artwork

by looking at these areas of the band Haim I hope to get a feel of who they are as a band and what design would best suit them.

Bio :

The fact that the band is made of sisters is a really key part of the band, they are obviously very close nit and know each other very well, being family and that. They are sister but they all manage to bring a unique quality to the band. 

Image :

The girls image is very playful and fun. It is playful in the way that they don't care what they look like, they pull weird faces and and mess around which shows that they aren't here to be sexy and pander the gaze of people, they are just having fun.

 

The way they dress is very 90's inspired which is also what the sound of the music takes inspiration from also.

Better off :

These are the lyrics for the song 'better off' by haim, which is the song that has been selected for competition.

The song is all about break ups and heart ache, but in a more positive way of saying how even though you might be hurting at the time you will be better off in the long run and will mend. This is a positive message about a dark subject which I will try represent in my designs.

Haim Records :

The design for Haims ep is very simple featuring an image of the band and their name in large writing. This makes sense, as this it their first ep so the most important thing is for people to know who they are and the name of their band, which is the opposite of what the secret 7' brief is about so it will be interesting to see he contrast of the two at the end.

Records :

I have looked into designs for ep that have something about them that is different and unique.

This is really interesting concept for the format of the ep where the cover is actually a book aswell and looks like a book. The cd is in the back of the cd cover. I think this is a really creative concept and a good way of showcasing the artist.

This album artwork has a really exciting use of die cut. the constrast of the grey scale image and the colour vinyl sticker through the die cut is really lovely. It's a very captivating concept and works really well.

Stoemp :

This is such an exciting unique apraoch to designing and making a album art work , using letter press for the copy but also using an everyday object and pressing that.

Stoemp took inspiration from Stukenborg's dice prints which are really impressive. I think this technique of printing using dice is really interesting and unique, it give a real feel, espeicialy in the colour red, a classic dice colour.

This is a really unique looking ep.

This is another letter press vinyl cover by stoemp too, and it has given just as unique look. the texture and look that the press has given is really beautiful, there are different tones and that are really lovely in this and I think it works really well and gives a really hight quality peice of work.

The colour and experimentaion in this work is really lovely some of the marble colour i dont particularly like but some really work. but they are all equalling striking.
